Udało nam się porozmawiać w Kolonii z Philem Marineau, menedżerem ds. marketingu zajmującym się Dante's Inferno. Spytaliśmy go m.in. co wyróżnia grę na tle choćby God of War 3, jak długa będzie gra oraz dlaczego Dante zamiast poetą jest przypakowanym rycerzem z ogromną kosą.

Why should we choose Dante's Inferno over e.g. God of War 3?

We are always excited when people put us in the same sentence as God of War 3, it's a great game. But what makes Dante's Inferno so spectacular is the nine circles of Hell. This is a 700 year old poem that stood the test of time, that's still taught in most schools all over Europe and some in the United States. The idea that you get to start in one circle and go through Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Avarice, Wrath, Sloth, Heresy, Violence, Fraud, Treason, and then fight the ultimate boss battle with Satan at the end - it's really what is going to set it apart.

Why did you choose Dante himself as the player character in Dante's Inferno?

The reason we chose Dante as the main character for Dante's Inferno is because Dante Alighieri chose himself as the main character for his poem.

Yes, but he wasn't a huge knight with the scythe of Death...

Absolutely. Throughout time people have read Dante's Inferno and sort of re-imagined it in their own way for their medium. For the video game, we had to add some changes, we made Satan more important, we gave Beatrice a larger role in the story. And as for Dante, he was a veteran of the Italian Civil War, his grandfather was a veteran of the Crusades, so we decided to move the story a hundred years back and make Dante a crusader.

Do you think playing the game will make people read the book?

From what we've seen so far, Dante's Inferno will in fact make people more interested in the book. You could ask the question "Why would Dante Alighieri be unhappy if he saw the game?". I think it's a new interpretation, there's been sculptures and paintings and abstract art, and this is just another sort of extension of it.

What is your favorite sin?

I would have to say gluttony, especially when I'm at Gamescom in Germany.

How long is the game?

In terms of length of the game in hours, that's something we don't want to say, because as soon as we do, someone who is very good at it will say "Hey, I finished it in two minutes!". The consumers have a lot of choices, especially with one of our competitors coming out, we have downloadable content scheduled, we have a lot of replayability.

Is the game tied in any way to the upcoming movie?

Yes, a lot of people have really been excited about what we've done. There's a comic book about the game coming on December 9 from DC, there's an animated feature that's going to ship with the game. And there is the Universal option, we have the writer who did... actually, I don't know if I should be talking about it, since I don't know if we announced the writer yet. But we have a famous writer whom we are really excited about.

Will the game have various difficulty settings, or only one difficulty?

We have been doing a lot of polishing, especially on the difficulty settings, because in the action-adventure genre that's what people really like. They like to play it through one time, see the story, learn all the combos, and then play it on a harder difficulty and really go at it.

Will all of these settings be available from the start, or will any of them be unlockable?

I don't know, I don't think we've established exactly how we're going to do that yet. As of right now, they're all available at the start, but yeah, we might have "Ultimate" or "Satan Mode" available only if you beat it at Normal.

Will there be any differences between the PS3 and 360 versions, not in terms of graphics, but in terms of features?

Right now we're aiming to make a great game on both consoles and there's not a lot of differentiation between the two. The achievements and trophies should probably be pretty similar.

Do you plan to make any collector's edition?

Yes, there is a European collector's edition planned, what exactly is going to be in it has not been revealed yet, but the details should be released pretty soon.

Who inspired you in terms of art and design?

Everybody, to be honest. We spent a lot of time looking at the classics: Rodin, Breugel, Bosch, but also even modern day folks like Wayne Barlowe, who's been drawing hell for 30 years. When we figured out we're going to do this game, we decided to call him and talk. And in this game you'll see a lot of his original creations. We literally looked at everything. We actually have a recreation of the Gates of Hell by Rodin as you walk into our studio.

If you could take another famous literary work, which of them would you make a game of?

A lot of classic literature is included in games nowadays. If you look at Bioshock, there was a lot of Atlas Shrugged. You look at Devil May Cry, and there was a lot of Dante's Inferno as well. The reason we picked Dante is because it's perfect for a video game. You start at the top, you go through this journey, you have an ultimate boss battle. But Dante's Inferno is just part 1 of the Divine Comedy, there's Purgatorio and Paradiso. And we have a lot of great ideas for that.

Other than that, I don't think I could just pull one book right now and say "Hey, that one should be a game".  People have always been taking literature and mixing it up. I've just read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, where the author took Jane Austen and put a twist on it. I'm looking forward to see whatever the next one's going to be.

Dlaczego powinniśmy wybrać Dante's Inferno, a nie np. God of War 3?

Zawsze pochlebia nam, gdy ludzie wymieniają nas jednym tchem z God of War 3, to świetna gra.

No i Universal planuje film, do którego scenariusz pisze człowiek, który...

Co was inspirowało, jeśli chodzi o styl graficzny?

W zasadzie wszyscy. Wejście do naszego studia to replika bramy piekła Rodina.

Ostatnio czytałem Dumę i uprzedzenie i zombie, gdzie autor wziął książkę Jane Austen i dodał coś nowego.
